Trevor Smith
 
Breast and General Surgeon. Established the Breast Centre at Ascot Hospital in 1999 to provide “one stop” specialist assessment of all breast problems. Has acquired training in a range of new techniques including sentinel node biopsy, intra-operative ultrasound, breast reduction and onco-plastic techniques. A pioneer in the use of clinician-performed ultrasound to enhance diagnosis and treatment of surgical conditions and has attended and run training courses on the use of ultrasound by surgeons. Dr Steve Helander
 
Specialist dermatologist and dermatologic surgeon for 15 years in the local area. Offers a general medical and surgical dermatology service. Consults at East Care two days per week. Graduated in Auckland and also trained in London and the Mayo Clinic in the USA. Special interest in the surgical and non-surgical management of skin cancer. Full body skin cancer checks and a full range of non-surgical and surgical options. Screens for and manages early melanoma. Performs many smaller procedures on site at East Care. Based in South East Auckland with experience across most aspects of General Surgery and a special interest in breast, (benign and malignant), endocrine (thyroid, parathyroid and adrenal) and laparoscopic surgery. Trained in NZ, two years as a consultant breast and endocrine surgeon at the Glasgow Royal Infirmary in Scotland. Consults at East Care, operates at Mercy and Ormiston Hospitals. HEAD, NECK/MELANOMA SURGERY
James H F Shaw
 
Clinical Professor of Surgery. Melanoma, Head & Neck surgeon; graduated University of Otago 1974, holds both a Doctor of Medicine and a Doctor of Science degree and is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons both in general surgery and vascular surgery. Trained in NZ followed by specialty training in London, Harvard Medical School, Boston, and Sloan Kettering Cancer Centre in New York City. Consultant surgeon in the Auckland area since 1984 and has performed several thousand surgical operations. Specialist in head & neck surgery specifically thyroid, palpable lymph nodes, parathyroid, minimally invasive parathyroid surgery, parotid lumps, submandibular gland swellings, all head & neck tumours including skin cancers and melanoma. Paul Casey
 
Gastroenterologist at Middlemore Hospital with experience in all areas of his specialty. Sub interest is upper GI motility disorders, reflux, swallowing disorders and gastroparesis. GYNAECOLOGY
Dr Anil Sharma
 
Consultant Gynaecologist in Remuera and visits the clinic at East Care. Has considerable surgical experience and performs a wide range of procedures aimed at the management of women’s health problems, especially pelvic floor prolapse, incontinence, period problems and pelvic pain. There are many modern options for the management of these health issues which Anil is always happy to discuss. Surgery at the new Ormiston Hospital in Flatbush, Brightside and Gillies Hospitals in Epsom and Ascot Hospital, Greenlane.

I am a General Obstetrician and Gynaecologist with a part time appointment at National Women’s Hospital and I have consulting rooms in Parnell as well as East Care, if needed for minor procedures. If women come to see me at East Care for assessment, I like to be able to give them time to express their concerns and to be involved in the discussions about options for care and treatment. At National Women’s I am involved in the teaching of under-graduate medical students and the training of post graduates; I have been involved in medical politics for many years having been Chairman of the Medical Association, the Council of Medical Colleges and the Medical Council as well as Action on Smoking and Health and other bodies. In the year 2005 I was awarded the ONZM in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for Service to Health and Health Administration.
  
 

 
GYNAECOLOGY
Lynsey Hayward
 
Completed specialist training in NZ and the UK then in 2001 joined Middlemore Hospital as an SMO in obstetrics and gynaecology. I work in the department of urogynaecology at Middlemore Hospital and also in private at Auckland Urogynaecology in Parnell. Offers a full gynaecology service including medical management of gynaecological problems, colposcopy, laparoscopic, open and pelvic reconstructive surgery. I will be operating at the new Ormiston Hospital from July 2009. This will be a great opportunity to provide convenient local surgical services. I also operate at the Gillies Hospital, Epsom. A local Cockle Bay resident, my husband John is a local GP.
 

 
NEUROLOGY
Elizabeth Walker
 
After undergraduate training in medicine at the University of Tasmania, Elizabeth trainedin neurology at Auckland Hospital. Postgraduate training consisted of an EEG/epilepsy Fellowship, followed by EMG training at the Mayo Clinic, Rochester Minnesota. On returning to Auckland has been a member of the Department of Neurology, as well as head of Clinical Neurophysiology. A clinical consulting service is available at both Eastcare and 188 Specialist Centre, St Heliers. Nerve conduction studies/electromyography are currently performed only at St Heliers.
 

 
 
OPHTHALMOLOGY
Stephen Best
 
General ophthalmology, glaucoma and cataract surgery, neuro-ophthalmology. A Clinical Fellow at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia – Glaucoma 1990-1991; Neuro-Ophthalmology 1991-1992. An Otago Medical School graduate, with subsequent ophthalmology training in Auckland, then a 2 year clinical fellowship at Wills Eye Hospital, Philadelphia. Returned to Auckland Hospital Eye Department as a consultant ophthalmologist; still holds this position at Greenlane Clinical Centre and Auckland Eye.Clinical interest in the management of glaucoma and neuro-ophthalmic patients and provides surgical expertise in glaucoma and cataract surgery. Participates in glaucoma research involving international and multi-centre clinical trials. Stephen is a Clinical Senior Lecturer in the Department of Ophthalmology and the School of Medicine and currently a Part I Examiner for RANZCO and a reviewer for the Journal of Clinical and Experimental.

Completed his specialist Fellowship at the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Neil graduated Ohio State with a Master of
Science in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. Returned to NZ, 1988 and was appointed a senior lecturer in oral and maxillofacial surgery at Otago University. Michael Flint

He spent two years further post-graduate training in Melbourne, Australia (as a Microsurgery and Hand Fellow) and Norfolk, Virginia, USA (as Fellow in Cosmetic Surgery). He returned to New Zealand in 1989 and has worked in both public hospital and private practice since. He was Head of Department of the Plastic Surgery Unit at Middlemore Hospital and is a Clinical lecturer with the Auckland University Medical School He has published 30 articles on Reconstructive Cosmetic and Plastic Surgery and has been an invited speaker at international Plastic Surgery meetings.

Initially worked in Hamilton dealing manly with diabetic patients. Now focuses more on sports injury and orthopaedic problems. In particular, Mike enjoys helping those with chronic pain and dealing with ‘difficult’ cases. Actively participates in courses, workshops and continuing medical education; currently studying for Diploma of Sports Medicinethrough Otago University. Dr Terence ( Terry ) Macedo
 
Has private practice in Remuera; Counties Manukau DHB – Rheumatology Outpatients; DEXA Bone Density Reporting for Auckland Radiology Group; Member of Arthritis NZ NorthernRegional Liaison Group. Specialises in full range of rheumatic disorders including inflammatory arthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, the use of a newer biological therapies, autoimmune connective tissue disorders and gout. Additional special interests in seronegative spondylarthropathies, including psoriatic arthritis, reactive arthritis, sacroiliitis, ankylosing spondylitis and undifferentiated inflammatory enthesitis and tendonitis. Non inflammatory conditions such as osteoporosis and prevention of steroid induced osteoporosis, osteoarthritis, secondary degenerative arthritis conditions, overuse related tendonitis. Has regular involvement in the diagnosis and management of chronic musculoskeletal pain disorders, regional pain disorders and complex regional pain disorders. Consultations include detailed history and medical examination, blood test and radiology referrals, formulation of diagnosis and treatment plan. RHEUMATOLOGY
Dr Hassan Mubark
 
Specialist General Physician & Rheumatologist. I work at Middlemore Hospital, private at East Care (Howick) and Manukau radiology and specialist centre. I see variety of cases which can be referred by GP/physio or patients themselves. I deal with Inflammatory and non-inflammatory acute and chronic joint diseases (like osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, back pains, lupus, vasculitis, etc). Also experienced in acute and chronic pain syndromes. Additionally sport and all other injuries via ACC (consultations, procedures, various test and referrals including surgical, MRI/CT/ultrasound are all free of charges. Southern Cross patients are free of charges for rheumatologic and medical consultations, long term follow up and procedures and various tests/radiology. Has a particular interest in urological oncology having undertaken a Fellowship in Miami, USA in 2000 in cancer surgery. Performs Brachytherapy (Radioactive seed implants) and surgery. Gives balanced advice to men regarding prostate cancer management best suited to their situation. Nerve sparing radical prostatectomy offers men the hope of maintaining normal erectile function. One of only 3 NZ urologists performing robotic prostate surgery which offers the potential for “keyhole” cancer removal with faster recovery. Laser prostate surgery for non-cancerous prostate enlargement is another strong interest. Also sees general urological referrals including kidney stone disease, vasectomy, stress incontinence.
 
 

 
UROLOGY
Derek Rothwell
 
Consultant at East Care since the centre relocated there from Highland Park. Specialises in adult endoscopy for investigation of haematuria, all prostate pathology including outflow obstruction, prostatitis and prostate cancer. Also specialises in day stay urological surgery including circumcision, all scrotal and testicular surgery plus vasectomy reversal. Is interested in the treatment of prostate cancer using brachytherapy (radioactive seed implants) and were the first group to introduce this treatment to NZ in 1999. He and oncologist, John Matthews, have successfully treated more than 600 patients. Also runs a urology clinic at the Manukau Superclinic. Holds a masters degree in Paediatric Urology hence his added interest in paediatric urology including paediatric reconstructive urology and\ circumcisions.
 
 

 
UROLOGY
Robin Smart
 
An urologist with more than 30 years experience. Has been consulting at East Care for several years. Interested in all areas of the specialty, particularly in prostatic disease, including prostatitis, obstructive problems and PSA issues, TRUS prostatic biopsy, prostate cancer. Provides appropriate management for individual men with prostate cancer including surgery, radiotherapy, androgen deprivation therapy or active surveillance. An active member of the Medical Committee of the Prostate Cancer Foundation. Urinary infection, haematuria, other urological cancers, urinary incontinence, urinary calculi and lithotripsy are other interests. Also has a medicopolitical interest; on the Board of the NZMA for several years.
 

 
VASCULAR SURGERY
Peter Vann (Vanniasingham)
 
Specialist vascular surgeon with the Auckland Regional Vascular Service at Auckland City Hospital. Trained in Auckland and passed the FRACS in general surgery, 1993. Was Consultant Surgeon at Auckland Hospital prior to selection into the Royal Australasian College of Surgeons Vascular Fellowship Programme. Worked in Australia for two years in specialised vascular units and was the first NZ Surgeon to obtain the FRACS in Vascular Surgery by examination. Then worked in the UK with Professor Sir Peter Bell, world renowned for
his pioneering work in endovascular and vascular techniques. Also obtained the FRCS England and FRCS Edinburgh, prior to returning to Auckland in 1999. Special interest in all types of arterial surgery ie carotid surgery, stroke prevention, aortic aneurysm repair both open & endovascular techniques, peripheral arterial reconstruction for occlusive and aneurysmal disease of the extremities both upper and lower limbs with bypass & in situ surgery and comprehensive diagnosis & treatment of varicose veins, venous insufficiency
