What is a minor injury? (and when to come to Urgent Care)

Every day we help people with minor injuries in our clinic. Accidents happen! A quick assessment of a wound, graze, or laceration will determine what care you need. Our minor injuries clinic can help you with sprains, strains, bumps and bruises too.

Of course, if you already have an infection, you can see our Nurse Practioner who can give you a prescription to be picked up at our onsite Pharmacy.

Three steps for assessing a minor injury (and determining if you need to come to our centre)

  1.  Does the wound need stitching? If the wound is gaping or a cut is deep it will need to be assessed. If you wound is on the face it might scar if not properly treated.
  2. Are you having difficulty controlling bleeding? If you’ve put pressure onto the cut and it is not under control within 20 minutes, come in to see us.
  3. If there is a foreign body inside the wound we might need to remove it for you i.e. glass, a thorn, gravel or a splinter.

Signs your minor injury needs medical assessment & treatment

It’s important to get proper care of injuries that might become infected, no matter how minor they may seem. Unfortunately, cuts or burns that aren’t properly dressed are the least likely to heal well.

Good wound care starts with careful, sterile cleaning and dressing. But sometimes, your wound might need topical or oral antibiotics later if an infection takes hold.

Signs of infection or deterioration include:

  • swelling
  • pain or discomfort
  • oozing of pus or festering or a scab that is increasing in size. Could be accompanied by odour
  • redness or a red streaking around the injury
  • heat around the injury
  • fever if the infection takes hold

First Aid for treating a minor injury

  1. Here’s a list of tips to help you treat minor cuts and scrapes to avoid the risk of infection. However, if you have deep laceration that leads to excessive bleeding, we can help.
  2. Rinse the wound with clean water and an antiseptic solution like Dettol Wound wash spray.
  3. Gently apply firm, direct pressure to stop the bleeding.
  4. Check for any foreign bodies that might be stuck inside the wound. If it’s easy to remove you can use tweezers or come and see us.
  5. Apply an antibiotic cream, like Crytaderm, to keep the wound clean and moist.
  6. Wrap the wounded area and a bandage or sterile wound dressing.
  7. Ensure your tetanus shot is current. Ring your GP if you aren’t sure. Also, if you see signs of infection, it’s good to check you have been vaccinated recently.

What to bring to Urgent Care

  • An ice pack can help reduce pain and swelling while you travel or wait to be seen.
  • Do you think a foreign body might need to be removed? i.e. a sting or a plant? It’s useful to take a picture of what you came in contact with (if possible). This allows us to identify if any further reaction may occur. i.e White Tail Spider bite.
