When should I come to Urgent Care for toothache or following an accident?

If you’ve had an accident where you’ve hurt your mouth, lips or gums, you might need to come to Urgent Care before seeing the dentist.

Understandably, no one wants to wait for dental care. It can be very painful. So East Care has options to help you get the dental support you need.

Moreover, if you’ve had an accident where you’ve hurt your mouth, lips or gums, you might need to come to Urgent Care first. Also, this applies if you have broken a tooth or teeth.

What to expect when having emergency dental care:

  • First, we’ll check if you need any medical care to deal with bruising, swelling or bleeding.
  • Next, we can assess when you should see the dentist for chips or restoration.

Don’t delay in coming in if the tooth is loose, broken or has fallen out completely. Remember, the sooner we fix it, the more likely the tooth will survive!

Can I use my dental health insurance?

Southern Cross Health Society Easy-claim is available for members of this scheme.

Will ACC cover a broken tooth?

Generally, breaking a tooth is due to an accident. This could commonly be following a fall, a sporting accident, or taking a knock to the face.  So long as the claim meets the criteria of an accident, ACC will help cover the cost of emergency dental.

Of course, if you see our Urgent care team, we will chat about ACC and help you with the correct forms. Coverage is for unexpected, violent, and or accidental injuries.

What should you do if you damage or break or lose a tooth?

Luckily, we have a great dentist onsite at our Botany Road Health Hub. If the dentist is not open, contact us.

First Aid for a hurt or broken tooth

  • Is your gum or lip bleeding? Apply gentle pressure with a clean cloth.
  • Try to hold this in place for 15 minutes.
  • Bring any fragments, as they could be restored later.
  • If the tooth is displaced, gently move it into position. This can help save the tooth.

First Aid for a tooth that has fallen out

  • Has a tooth been knocked out or broken at the root? Chances are it can be replaced if you get urgent care.
  • The longer it is out of the socket, the less likely we will have success.
  • Hold the crown of the tooth and rinse it briefly.
  • Carefully push the tooth back into its socket. Then bite softly on a clean cloth to hold it in place while you get emergency dental care.
  • Meanwhile, ask a friend to call us or pre-register your visit to East Care so that we know you have a dental issue.

What if you can’t put the broken tooth back in the socket?

  • Protect the root cells by placing the tooth into a clean container with milk covering it.
  • No milk to hand? Try saliva in a cup or pop the tooth under your lip. Aim to keep the root moist and clean.
  • Drying or rubbing the tooth can damage the root.
