What are the symptoms of influenza? (and why a flu shot helps)
Remember the last time you had a cough, fever or body aches? You might have experienced influenza symptoms in the past. Flu is a respiratory infection that can cause serious side effects in young children, older people, and those with certain medical conditions.
Even though there’s always a chance of getting the flu, during winter it’s most likely to spread throughout the community. So whilst not a cure, getting an influenza vaccine injection is your best defence from the flu.
Who can get an influenza vaccine injection?
Now, anyone over the age of 6 months can receive the annual flu vaccine. Furthermore, getting the flu vaccine early in the season. This will allow your body time to produce antibodies against the flu virus. Subsequently, you’ll fight off infection more quickly.
How to get the influenza vaccination at East Care
To protect yourself and your family, you can come into East Care to get your influenza vaccination. If you are eligible for a funded flu vaccination please see your registered GP. Moreover, getting the flu jab is quick. However, you’ll need to stay in the waiting room for 15 minutes following the injection. That’s because we like to monitor you for any allergic reactions. Similarly, don’t hesitate to call if you have any severe reactions. Expect to have a bit of a sore arm. Keep in mind, you might feel a bit unwell or feverish which is normal.

Benefits of getting an influenza vaccine
Boosting your immune system to flight the flu supports your total wellbeing. But it also protects people around you. Getting the flu jab makes you less likely to contract and pass the flu on.
The Influvac injection can:
- Decrease the risk of influenza-related complications
- Lowers the risk of influenza deaths in children
- Protects pregnant women during and after pregnancy
- Also, it protects people who have chronic health conditions
- Lessens the severity of influenza illness
How much does the Influvac injection (flu jab) cost?
For those most at risk, the Influvac injection is free. Included in this group are:
- people ages 65 and over
- pregnant women
- Pacific people over 55 years
- people with underlying health conditions over 6 months old
- children aged 3 – 12 years old
- people with significant mental health or addiction needs
Everyone else can get an Influvac flu vaccine Injection at East Care for $30.

To join our clinic, you first need to fill out the patient enrolment forms to register with the PHO that we belong to. This is a Ministry of Health requirement. You will need to provide proof of identity and eligibility which may include the following forms of identification:
- NZ Passport or NZ birth certificate
- International passport with resident visa OR work visa of minimum 24-month duration
On the enrolment form you need to indicate which of our doctors (currently taking new patients) that you would like to be registered with.
Yes. As part of completing your enrollment, we request that you have a new patient screening appointment with one of our Nursing or Medical Centre Assistant team members.
This new patient appointment enables our team to work with you to better understand your current health and wellbeing.
Following the new patient appointment as above, you can book your first consultation with your nominated doctor.
The length of your first appointment with your new doctor will be as follows:

Payment is required at the time of consultation
You will get full access to the patient portal “My Indici” once you have completed your screening appointment.
